Here at Perry, there are plenty of clubs to join every year that range from helping the environment, robotics, to even playing board games. One club in particular is the Empowering Women’s Club (EWC), which builds a community around advocating for women’s rights and creating a space for students to feel seen and heard. If you ever wanted to be a part of something important, then this is the club for you.
Spencer Lazarowicz, the president of EWC, explained in an interview, “Our club was formed to raise awareness on feminist issues, to create a space where girls could find themselves, and raise their self-esteem.” Oftentimes, people need a safe space to wind down and express themselves in a kind environment. Lazarowicz continued by explaining why she joined the club, “I wanted to become more educated on feminism. I wanted to become a leader who could inspire people to speak out for what’s right and what they believe in.”
If people are on the fence about joining, Madaline Trittipo-Biagi, The vice president of EWC, explained that “People should join EWC because it is a very fun club, we do a lot of parties and games. We do a lot of games. We sometimes will draw out the outline of a woman, and then we mark down things women are insecure about that they shouldn’t be insecure about, like cellulite or stretch marks. But we also learn about women’s history, like the suffrage movement, and when women got the right to vote, and certain women who are very popular in history, and what they did to earn that right to be popular in history.” A notable trait about this club is the community and friendship involved. Trittipo-Biagi further explained that, “Everyone is very close with each other. There is no hiding anything; it is very stress-free, you can tell us anything, and we won’t judge. You can come to me or the president about anything at all, and we’ll understand, and we will be like, ok, what can we do to understand what happened or what can we do forward from this?” This shows the close nature of the club and how tight-knit the community is within EWC.
Empowering women’s club is a club for anyone who wants to gain more information about women in history and have a community of like minded people. If you are considering signing up contact the president, Spencer Lazarowics, on the EWC instagram or reaching out to Mrs. Wintin-Guthrie.
