It is that time of year again here at PMHS! Classes came together to participate in annual class competitions, most notably the hallway decorating competition. This year, the themes were The Hamptons (Seniors), New Orleans (Juniors), Miami (Sophomores) and Chicago (Freshmen). The official day for decorating was Wednesday September 17, but preparation for this event started well before the day of hallway decorating. The seniors, who won the class competition title, went all out this year. Kylie Lockard, a proud senior, said, “I had a great time building the lamposts since it allowed me to work with my friends, as well as being able to support my fellow seniors.” This is how some seniors feel as well. Lockard then further said, “ I think more people should do HOCO decorating because it allows for us to be creative in a space that is typically very bland and allows for collaboration and team efforts.”
Par Tha Cin, the secretary of the class 2028, said, “We, class officers, put a lot of thought and work into planning for this specific day. Without the help of our classmates, it is very hard to execute something. We need our classmates. We want to know them and get to know their ideas,” Cin said that in the future, “Students should participate in hallway decorating because it allows us to bond together as a team and make something beautiful together. Sometimes, the end results aren’t the best, but we do go home with memories.”
To add on to this point, Duhtin Cung, a member of class 2028, said, “Hallway decorating is definitely something that all Perry students should participate in if they have the time and commitment to do so. I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s something that just anyone can do because it obviously requires a lot of effort and time to build, paint, plan and cooperate with others to create a hallway that the whole team can be proud of.” Some agree that hallway decorating is a great team bonding activity and a great addition to HOCO week. Cung’s favorite part of decorating, “isn’t the cutting or painting itself, though. It’s meeting new people. When everyone is working towards a common goal, it makes it way easier to talk to others and bond.”
Homecoming week is what some Perry students look forward to, and as Cung said, “Hoco hallway decoration is definitely something to look forward to each year because it helps to foster bonds with other people in your team and teaches a lot of things like leadership, patience, and teamwork.” Some may argue that the best way to connect with people is to work on something of common interest together, which is just what our teams did during homecoming hallway decorating.
