Sydney Mathis
My name is Sydney Mathis. I am sixteen years old, and I am a junior at PMHS. On the Focus, my responsibilities include copy editing, occasionally taking pictures, and writing various stories for various categories. Being in the Focus has really changed my outlook on a lot of things. Before ever being on staff, I wasn't very good at speaking to people. Focus has improved my communication skills, by doing a bunch of interviews. I am constantly learning new things, and it has also made me more open-minded, in the sense that I am continuously hearing the opinions of others to write all of these stories. Journalism is the main reason I am so socially aware, and for that, I am grateful for the opportunity to be on staff and share news to other students.

One of the biggest ideas that I think needs to be taught more universally is the idea of empathy. I am very strongly opinionated on the blatant belief that everyone deserves to be treated equally. I am very fond of documentaries, or just anything that can broaden my knowledge and perspective on things. Although I am not very musically talented in any capacity, I spend almost all of my free time listening to different artists, trying to find more and more that I relate to and enjoy. In the future, I plan to attend college, most likely in Indiana, to work towards a psychology degree hopefully. I haven't fully made my mind up on what I would like to do in detail, but I do know that the way people think interests me immensely. Journalism also has had an impact on that aspect of my life. I am constantly being exposed to a plethora of opinions from a large quantity of sources.
