Tennis and soccer bounce back after setbacks
The boys varsity tennis team has had a solid season this year with senior Sajin Smith and junior Blake Deaton leading them at number one and number two singles.
Even so, at the Mid-State conference tournament the team secured a 4th place, falling short of their goal to finish in the top 3 places.
Although the tournament was a rough display to be improved upon, Smith won the Mid-State conference championship. His high performance gives the team hope to bounce back in the Marion County tournament.
The team is already working hard for future success. Smith is preparing to soon compete for a top spot in the state. They all plan on learning from their previous mistakes and work on their game play.
With this, they hope to put themselves in a good position to be successful in their upcoming sectionals tournament.
“We need to get in some good team practice and hit a bunch of balls in order to compete at the level we need for the upcoming matches,” Smith says.
This season, the boys varsity soccer team has done very well, they boast an exceptional 7-1-1 record, and are in contention for a top placement in the state tournament.
Despite their record, this season hasn’t come without its challenges, including the loss against Franklin Community. This coming as their first loss, head coach Machy Magdalinos had to rethink his team’s approach.
“My goal for the guys moving forward is taking one game at a time, worrying more about how we play, and less about how other people are playing,” says Magdalinos.
After their loss against Franklin Community, the team went 3-0 the next week against some of the toughest opponents on their schedule. Beating Plainfield, Columbus North, and Franklin Central was a step forward for the team, and it proved that they could learn from a loss.
The team’s ability to stick together after a loss is credited to the chemistry that they have built outside of soccer, developing comradeship on and off the field.
