Falcons tennis sweep Southport Cardinals

On Wednesday, Sept. 7, the Perry Meridian tennis team defeated the Southport Cardinals in a dominant 5-0 fashion. Notably, Brock Hutson had a three-set win to catapult the team to the sweep. Following the win, the Falcons are 8-4 in the season and ranked fourth in the conference.

“We got a very good start from all five spots,” Perry tennis coach Daniel Schoch said, “the couple that got tight at the end we found a way to pull those out like we should have.”

The victory against the Cardinals began with senior Kolton Wright, the first falcon to close out his match. This is nothing new from Wright, as he has been showing out all year.

“He has really been a dominant force,” Schoch said.

The team is already showing success even without one doubles player Lane Terry in this past week’s matchups. Terry was participating in Falcons Expressions in Student Theatre and did not meet practice requirements.

Now, the Falcons are prepping for a tough week against conference opponents Plainfield and Whiteland this week.

“We are going to have to find a different gear,” Schoch said, “I think that [Terry] will provide a little extra spark.”

This upcoming stretch will be a difficult one for the Falcons as both teams are ranked in the 2022 Boys Tennis Rankings.

“We haven’t beat a ranked team yet,” Schoch said.

The competition will be good for the team as they prepare for the upcoming postseason. They have a chance to bring back a fifth consecutive sectional title.

“Good teams make you raise your game,” Schoch said.

This past week’s win against the Cardinals motivates the team as they look to boost their record to 10-4.
