Jan 30, 2026
- On Jan. 7, 37-year-old Renee Nicole Goode was fatally shot twice in the right side of her chest and once in her left forearm by Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer Johnathon Ross while in her car. She had just taken her youngest child to elementary school in Minneapolis. Her last words were “It’s okay. I’m not mad at you.” She was later labeled a “domestic terrorist” by the Trump administration.
- On Jan. 20, 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken and detained by ICE after coming home with his father from his preschool. A witness, Pastor Sergio Amezcua, said that the ICE agents were “trying to use the baby to get [Ramos’ mother, who has yet to be named] to come out of her house.” Ramos was seen wearing a blue bunny hat, a flannel jacket and a spiderman backpack. Ramos and his father are now located in a “family detention facility” in Dilley, Texas. The family was originally from Ecuador, but they were in Columbus Heights, Minnesota when they were taken.
- On Jan. 24, 37-year-old Alex Jeffrey Pretti was shot 10 times by two Customs and Border Defense officers after filming an arrest of a civilian. He was pepper sprayed, wrestled to the ground and disarmed of his legal, concealed firearm before he was shot. Pretti was an intensive care nurse serving for the United States Department of Veteran Affairs.
- According to an article posted on Jan. 26, Greg Bovino, the “commander at large” of the Border Patrol was put on leave from his position and is expected to return to his previous position as a chief patrol agent in El Centro, California.
- On Jan. 28, the two officers involved in the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti were placed on administrative leave. DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin said “three days of administrative leave” are given to any agent involved in an “officer related shooting”. McLaughlin deemed it “standard protocol”.
- According to articles posted Jan. 29, Liam Conejo Ramos was visited in the family detention facility he is being held at in Texas. Texas congressman Joaquin Castro visited the boy and his father, Adrian Conejos Arias. The father reported to Castro that Conejo Ramos has “not been himself” and has been “depressed and sad”. Conejos Arias also said he is “concerned for [Liam’s] mental state”, and that the boy has been “asking for his mother and backpack” nonstop. Castro announced at a press conference that Ramos seemed “lethargic, [but] he has been asking about his family and classmates.” Ramos wishes to return to school as soon as he can.
