As many students at Perry Meridian already know, it is officially women’s history month. This historical annual event was a law passed by congress in 1778 to celebrate women in history who were overlooked for their accomplishments and present time women who are shaping the future for generations to come.
Junior Justine Klonne said that her favorite part about being a woman is “getting to have ‘girl time’ hanging out, talking about everything and hyping each other up.” She continued, saying “Also the support and energy women give each other can make you feel really confident and understood.” A common answer while interviewing others was the community of womanhood shared amongst most women. Klonne’s best piece of advice given to her by a woman is “Don’t shrink yourself to make others comfortable take up the space you deserve.”
Senior Grace Tadlock, while being interviewed, said her greatest inspiration is “my mom. She joined the military straight out of high school then left her husband to give her girls a better life. The way she carries herself inspires me to be an independent woman and never be weighed down by a man.” As Tadlock’s inspiration is her mother, she has given her the best advice “she told me that I can do whatever I want as long as I put in the effort and work.”
Women’s History Month is a time to celebrate and be your best self while also educating yourself and others on women of the past and present who are changing the world as we know it. In the past, many women were overlooked for their accomplishments or seen as too independent or innovative, which is why this month is so important to many people. The best way to celebrate is connecting with the women around you, sharing stories and learning together what it truly means to be a woman.
