On Monday, December 8, information was shared with students that PMHS Principal Kert Boedicker’s 15-month-old granddaughter, Madelyn, was diagnosed with adrenocortical carcinoma, a rare cancer that affects only 200-600 people in the United States per year. This makes up 0.0001% of the entire U.S. population, deeming the cancer as an “ultra-rare” form of it, according to cancer.org.
Boedicker and his family have had an incredibly challenging few weeks, keeping Madelyn in the Riley Children’s Hospital for treatment. They are also working with experienced doctors from Boston to try to give Madelyn the best possible care. Unfortunately, however, the life-saving treatment Madelyn needs is considered “out of network” by their insurance. This means that Boedicker and his family are left responsible for the medical expenses surrounding Madelyn’s treatment.
Boedicker and his family have set up a GoFundMe in order to help to afford the significant payments for the hospital.
“Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a difference,” Assistant Principal Lauren Buesking said.
Through all that is happening in this unimaginable time, Boedicker is trying to keep a positive mind. “These next few days are going to be stressful, but with the support we are receiving from everyone, we are going to win the day.”
